Quick Answer: How Long Does It Take To Wax A Snowboard

By Ava Lawson |

Waxing your snowboard is incredibly easy once you know what you are doing. With all the necessary equipment it should take around 20-25 minutes to wax a board. Regular waxes keep your board running fast while providing a protective layer for your base.

How long does it take to tune and wax snowboard?

Most can do it in about 2-3 minutes on a belt. Hot waxes are done occassionally, but those people do it for a living so even there you could probably have it in 15-20 minutes.

How much does it cost to wax a snowboard?

It usually takes about 12-15 grams to hot wax one pair of skis or one snowboard, therefore a 110 gram block should last approximately 7-9 services. Rub on wax provides many more applications on a per gram basis (approximately double), however it will wear off significantly faster.

How much wax do I put on my snowboard?

5 ounces per wax. I go around the edge first, making a full circle. I then down the middle of the board in sort of a zig zag pattern one way and then do the same the other way, resulting in somewhat of a criss-cross pattern. The more you do it, the better you will be able to gauge how much wax you need to use.

How often should I hot wax my snowboard?

Generally, you want to hot wax your board every 3 to 4 days of riding. This ensures better glide in varying snow conditions and an overall better performance. Just make sure you’re using the right type of wax for the specific conditions.

How do I know if my snowboard needs sharpening?

How do you know when your snowboard edges need to be sharpened? If your edge feels blunt or ‘burred’ when you rub it gently with your thumb then it might be time for you to get your edges sharpened. This is usually the test to see if it’s time for a sharpen.

How do I know if my snowboard is in good condition?

Major things to look out for Cracked or damaged sidewalls. Have a good look along the sidewalls, check that there are no vertical cracks in the sidewall. Sidewalls splitting/separating from base or topsheet. Core damage. Die cut base separating. Cracked edges. Split topsheets. Damage in the base, scratches and core shots.

Can I use a regular iron to wax my snowboard?

Yes, you can use a traditional clothes iron to wax skis or a snowboard, but there are some things to be aware of. Regular household irons fluctuate in temperature more widely than wax-specific irons and can easily be set at too hot a temperature, causing you to damage your bases.

Is it bad to store snowboard upright?

It is best to store your gear standing up, as opposed to laying it on a flat surface. Storing your gear upright helps to preserve the camber, or shape, of the snowboard. Avoid placing your gear on a hard surface.

How many years does a snowboard last?

As long as your board is stored dry, well supported and waxed, it can last for over 10 years in storage without deteriorating too much. Most riders store their boards for about 6 months in between seasons each year.

Do brand new Burton Snowboards come waxed?

Our boards come waxed and ready to ride out of the box. But, you are welcome to tune or de-tune them to your individual snow conditions or preferences. It’s always a good idea to wax your board after a few days of riding.

Should you wax your snowboard at the end of the season?

Wax your snowboard with a waxing iron. Although regular waxing during the winter is important too, be sure to also apply a thick layer of wax on your snowboard in the summer to preserve it during the off-season. Just be sure to remove the wax before the next time you go snowboarding.

Can you over wax a snowboard?

You might think leaving some wax on the base of the snowboard is going to make you go a bit faster on the hill but no, you’re WRONG! Leaving excess wax on the base is actually going to dry the base out quicker.

Should a beginner wax their snowboard?

Speedier gear: Even if you’re a beginner, you’ll enjoy a smoother slope experience if you wax; you’ll also appreciate some extra speed when you’re ready to graduate from snowplow turns to parallel turns—or from skidding turns to carving turns on a snowboard.

How often should I tune my snowboard?

Just like skis, a snowboard should be tuned about every 20 snowboarding sessions. You will notice when your snowboard needs to be tuned when the edges start to look chipped and worn out.

Should you leave bindings on snowboard?

This will protect the base and help to stop rust build-up. Unscrew and remove your snowboarding bindings before you store it away for the summer. This will help to maintain the camber (Bend) of your board for better turns.

What angle should I sharpen my snowboard edges?

A standard edge tune is 90 degrees, though for more aggressive carving or hard snow you might opt for 89 degrees or less. (If you’re really serious about your edges you can even adjust the angle of the base edge too, though this level of precision is usually the realm of racers).

How do you know if your snowboard edges are dull?

If the edge shaves bits of nail off–then it’s sharp, if not–then it’s dull. Typically the biggest indicator that it’s time to service your board or skis is when things don’t feel like they’re going well anymore while you ride. Or you’ve hit a big rock or stump and you’ve done damage to your bases.

Is it bad to snowboard without wax?

Yes you can snowboard without wax but you are at risk of damaging your board from snow conditions, park obstacles, and base burn. It is recommended by top professionals to wax your board at regular intervals to maintain its life.

Do snowboards lose Pop?

It’s also been my experience that boards don’t really lose their pop with time (though top sheets or sidewalls can get brittle). Storage has nothing/very little to do with (unless you’re talking extreme conditions with constant UV exposure and extreme temperatures). Boards mostly break down from usage.
